About Us
Charles Sydnor has been
involved with the beef cattle industry since he was a boy. He spent
his summers on the family ranch near Dillon, Montana. Charles began
raising beef cattle on Braeburn Farm in 1975. He became interested
in grass fed beef in 2000. Braeburn Farm is now in the process of
transferring over to an exclusively grass fed cattle herd. The
current herd is made up of predominately Angus cattle However,
Charles has found that the best breed to finish on grass is the
Red Devon from the Rotakawa herd in New Zealand . Many of the best cows on the farm have been bred
to Red Devon bulls for two years now. Other cows were used
as recipients for embryo transfers, so that five pure Red Devon
calves were born in 2004. Fifteen pure Red Devon calves are
expected in 2005, with the goal of a pure
Red Devon herd within five years.
We are constantly trying to further our education at Braeburn Farm
through different activities. On September 16, 2003, we had a field
day on Grass Fed Beef at our farm with 150 people from all over the
southeast. Charles had Ridge Shinn and Gearld Fry, of the
Bakewell Reproductive Center,
and Ken McDowell, a specialist in Red Devon cattle at the farm to
teach us as well as others. Charles and Eliza have attended the
Ranching for Profit school and continue to participate in the
Executive Link program. Charles has attended educational seminars
with Allen Nations, Anibal Pordomingo of Argentina, Dick Divens, Jim
Gerrish, Gregg Simonds, and Bud Williams. Eliza has attended
seminars with Joel Salatin of Polyface Farm and animal behavior
specialist, Fred Provenza. Charles and Eliza attended GrazeFest in
Montgomery, AL, in September of 2004
